The River Detectives program is a meaningful way to explore the importance of catchments and waterways to Traditional Owners and this year’s NAIDOC Week theme is ‘For Our Elders’.
NAIDOC Week is always tricky to celebrate as it falls within the school holidays. But we are here to help if you are looking for ideas to celebrate the event when you return in Week 1 (or even in the last few days of this term).
There are so many valuable resources online these days but I have been taught many times that when learning about culture, always start local first then move broader to the Kulin nation, then broader again to Australia wide.
With that in mind, the River Detectives website is a great place to start for beautiful videos about traditional owners in your region (tick your region to filter and if there’s not much for your region go a little wider). Some of our favourite videos where Elders share their knowledge are:
Traditional Life at Merin Merin Wetland (North Central CMA region)
Sharing culture at Barengi Djul (Wimmera CMA region)
Sharing culture across Wadawurrung Country (Corangamite CMA region)
The Water Tribe and Ochre (Melbourne Water area)
Welcome to Wiradjuri Country (North East CMA region)
We are building our resource bank all the time so please leave a comment if you know of other great videos by and about Traditional Owners in your area that are not represented on our website yet.
Other online resources I would recommend (in no order of priority):
