I am happy to admit I am a passionate ‘birdo’ and truly believe birdwatching is one of the best hobbies you can have – it’s free, fun, relaxing, exciting and educational; you can do it anywhere/anytime and it’s one of the best ways to connect with the natural world around you. Keeping an eye and ear out for birds is like a treasure hunt every time you step outside !
It’s no surprise then that National Bird Week is one of my favourite times of the year – and now with the technology of wonderful apps and the growth of citizen-science, birdwatching is now more accessible and more ‘on trend’ than every before !
The Aussie Backyard Bird Count is a great way to connect with the birds in your backyard, no matter where your backyard might be — whether it’s a suburban backyard, a local park, a patch of forest, a farm, your school yard, down by the beach, your adopted River Detectives waterway, or the main street of town.
You can do as many surveys as you like between October 19-25. All you need to take part is 20 minutes and your favourite outdoor space – you don’t even have to leave home, making it the ultimate Covid-safe activity! Get the App and contribute to BirdLife Australia’s knowledge of Aussie Birds.
The Backyard Bird Count is an annual stand-alone event but if you become hooked on birdwatching there are year-round opportunities to complete seasonal bird surveys as part of Birdlife Australia’s free ‘Birds In Backyards’ survey program‘.
Keep an eye out for our October activity matrix which is all about the native fauna (including birds) that use our waterways – coming soon !
