Hello everyone, we are grade 5/6 -2024/2025 at Skipton Primary School. We are hosting a fishing competition, with the Stewart Park Committee of Management, called ‘Clear the Carp’ on Sunday the 13/04/2025 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM at Stewart Park, Skipton.
There is going to be food, a BBQ and lots of prizes such as fishing and camping equipment. The categories are longest Carp, smallest Carp, heaviest Carp, mystery weight and most Carp. The age groups are under 5, under 13, under 18, and Open. If you are under 18 or over 70 you won’t need a fishing licence for this event. If you’re under 18 years old, you will need a parent to sign you in to compete. Children under 10 years will need responsible adult supervision at all times.
On the day, some of Skipton’s expert fishermen will be doing fishing demonstrations. Landcare, Skipton Angling Club and Fish Care ( who; will have 20 rods available for those without equipment to use)will be there to help. If you are an adult and choose to participate with Fish Care you won’t need a licence.
We are doing this to help recover from the 2022 floods when thousands of carp washed into our beloved Mt. Emu Creek from Lake Burrumbeet. The carp are disturbing the mud in the bottom of the creek, making it extremely difficult for the platypus to find food and survive. The carp breed all year round, they eat native fish eggs and larvae that feed other native fish and birds. They also disturb the vegetation on the creek banks where frogs and platypus live.
Don’t be the one who misses out!
