There is so much happening at the moment – this week is Saltwatch Week, an environmental monitoring program that helps schools and communities understand the salinity problem in our waterways and catchments. It began in 1987 and is Australia’s longest-running citizen science program.
During Saltwatch Week each year, schools and community groups from all over Victoria can learn about the effects of salinity on water quality in their local catchment by collecting local water samples and testing the salt content.
Saltwatch Week coincides with Education Week in Victorian School so we understand this week is probably not very flexible but if you haven’t completed your May water quality tests yet this is the week to do it !
Simply complete your monthly tests, submit your data to the River Detectives website and your EC reading will be shared with the Waterwatch Victoria website with statewide data visible to the public from next week. This snapshot will provide a great opportunity for your students to compare/contrast your EC readings with others across the state.
And don’t forget that you can access our matrix of multi-age, cross-curricular salinity activities any time of year at the Dive Deeper tab of the River Detectives website and other resources are available at the Resource River Bank tab (make sure you check out the “Fresh and Salty” animation).
We always love to see what’s happening around the traps so if you get up to anything interesting in Saltwatch Week we encourage you to post on Billabong Banter or leave a comment to this post.
