Year 5 students surveyed Peppermint Grove’s habitat qualities on the bank, verge and in-stream. Its rating turned out to be FAIR. Considering it is a small site surrounded by houses and 2 roads, with drains leading into the site, it was looking pretty good! Christian College Bellarine have been monitoring this site for 12 years, since 2005. The site started as a graded bare earth dam, and now the vegetation is lush! During most visits, we hear frogs and insects calling. We always pick up a bag or two of rubbish that has blown in or washed in through the drains. Mostly it is packaging from chips, lollies and cigarettes. Around the fence, we often find empty alcoholic drink cans. We occasionally see the neighbour’s black cat and a bird carcass.
